What Chemicals Are Used in Wedding Dress Preservation
If you want to keep your wedding dress in commemoration of that special day, or so your daughter may wear it on her special day, the best thing to do to make sure it will stay as beautiful as they day you wore it is use a bridal gown preservation service.
What is Wedding Dress Preservation?
The restoration/preservation process will remove any yellowing of the gown’s material and will prevent further discoloration from happening. Once the dress has been restored to its original condition, it is placed in a box made from acid-free material, wrapped in tissue to prevent permanent wrinkling and sealed to keep out mildew and mold and to protect from the light.
How Does Wedding Dress Preservation Work?
When you are looking for a dry cleaner to preserve your wedding gown, it’s best to do a little research and find one that specializes in bridal gown preservation. Find a dry cleaner that will clean your gown in house rather than sending it out to a wholesale commercial dry cleaner; this will prevent the possibility of your dress being washed in a large machine along with other gowns and also the chance of it getting lost.
Wedding Dress Cleaning and Preservation Solvents
Perchloroethylene (perc) is the most commonly used chemical. This is because it is superior to other solvents for removing dirt and grease and is kind to fabrics such as rayon, acetate or silk. If you dress has beads or sequins attached, the dry cleaner will need to protect these as perc may damage them.
Exxon DF-2000 (Hydro-carbon) This is a relatively new petroleum-based solvent. It is quite safe to use on dresses with sequins and beads, though it is a little less effective at degreasing than perc.
Greenearth This is a relatively new silicone-based solvent. It is also safe for beads and sequins, but is not quite as effective at degreasing as perc. It is the most environmentally friendly of the solvents.
